Setting intentions can be a great way to getting successful. This post will help you to understand why and how to make it work.
Intentions vs. Resolutions
An intention is a positive choice, an affirmation of what you would like to realise in your life. A resolution is a change of comportment founded on negativity and frustration. Here is a simple example “my intention is to get more clients” and “my resolution is to stop drinking too many coffees”. Starting the year with a stressful decision is not a good idea. You need encouragement and motivation rather than focussing on the bad stuff.
Intentions are here to guide ourselves and to remind us to live our full potential. They allow space for mistakes rather than failures.
How to set your intentions for the New Year?
Before to set your intentions you need to know what you want, in which direction your life and/or your business you want to be. Firstly, you can write a list of things you want to achieve for the New Year. They need to be positive and achievable. Secondly, attribute each of them a number to get a sense of priority.
Getting a better understanding of your values will facilitate your personal and business growth.
Make sure this list contains ingredients that bring you happiness and leave you with a feeling of satisfaction.
Retain your 5 top priorities and for each of them write down what lead you towards it and what brings you away from it.
For example, my intention at the beginning of the year was to build my career as a freelancer. To make it work, all along the year I spoke with my friends about it, I updated my LinkedIn profile and passed some certifications, I downloaded some applications to help me manage it and much more. What could have take me away from my objective is spending too much time on social media or not taking enough time everyday to research for new clients.
Knowing what you are doing right and what will help you reaching your objective is important.
Focus on the BIG one
I’m sorry but you can’t get better at everything all at once. The key to being successful is to chose your top priority and concentrate on it.
What is that one thing you want to have achieved at the end of the year?
Some examples could be “live intentionally”, “get out of my comfort zone”, “start writing a blog”, “launch my freelance business”, “learn music production”…
Now that you have yours in your mind, you need to be certain of the reasons why. It needs to be authentic to you and valuable.
Get use of visualisation

The final step to make it work is to use your mind to picture how you would look like in this situation that you want. For example, if your intention is to live more intentionally, maybe you want to imagine yourself in a calm space, meditating.
Bringing your imagination and creativity in the process of setting intentions will make a big difference. You can change your desktop background with an image that reflects this intention or create a board with sticky notes that will help you remember your values.
Get the success you deserve
After doing all this work, you will clearly have your intention in your mind. The objective now is to keep it in your mind all year round and the success will come automatically. This doesn’t mean that everything will be easy and roll smoothly, you may live some down time and question yourself in the process but I can guarantee if this one thing you want is present in your mind at -almost- all time, then it will happen, no excuses!
The New Year is certainly a good time to be positive and kind with yourself, so is today and tomorrow, don’t forget this.
