How I create the best User Experience

My background in advertising intertwined with my 10 years of experience designing print and web design allow me to create the best User Experience for my clients.

Defining the audience

Firstly, I need to know who I am going to talk to. By defining the audience, I can understand the attributes, the values, the goals and the concerns of the visitors navigating on the website or the application. This will help to attract and retain the customers.

Focussing on the information

Secondly I like to focus on the goal of the visitor. Whether it is to find a particular information (in most cases), to buy a product, to watch cat videos or for entertainment, is it important to help the visitor reaching its goal quickly. Understanding where the visitor comes from is also essential in doing so.

Creating a simple and consistent design

The design needs to reflect the business. The branding needs to be consistent on every page and adapted to the web. A social guideline can be useful to be created from the brand guideline.

Stock photography should be avoided and the advertising (if there is) has to give a complimentary information to the visitors. If it’s not clear what the visitors have to do to find what they need, they will leave. Consistent design means having the same response whenever people perform an action.

Using a standard design

Visitors expect to navigate easily as they do on other websites. So the design needs to be standard in order for the visitors to find what they are looking for. This doesn’t mean every website should look the same. The magic about User Experience and User Interface Design is to create a unique experience that is easy and intuitive.

Standard design is supported by major browsers and it will avoid to confuse users.

Ensuring the content is good – and short!

The copywriting is primordial in leaving the best experience for the visitors. The language needs to be specific and the information clear, short and precise.

It is important to understand the structure and the content of the website before to start the design. It is much easier to fit a design around a well structured content rather than the opposite. Later in the process, the content can always be adjusted.

Users scan the pages rather than reading them and usually the first 11 characters of a paragraph are the most important. Therefore, a summary of the page’s content in the first paragraph is a great idea. Making sure the headings convey useful information is also essential. Finally bullet points and lists are a great structure to push the visitors to read more.
